de dogmaticus en canonist van het Anglicanisme (Heavitree, bij Exeter, Mrt 1553(1554?)- Bishopsbourne 2 Nov. 1600), studeerde te Oxford, werd Master of the Temple te Londen (1585), te Boscombe (1591) en later predikant te Bishopsbourne, tot zijn dood. Zijn dogmatiek van het Anglicanisme zette hij uiteen in de Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity (8 vols, 1594-1660; 2 vols in Everyman’s Library), die als de theorie van de religious settlement onder koningin Elizabeth zijn te beschouwen.
