Nederlands sinoloog (Harlingen 28 Juni 1889), studeerde Nederlands, daarna Chinees te Leiden, Berlijn en Parijs. In 1912 werd hij tolk aan het Nederlands gezantschap te Peking, in 1919 lector in de Chinese taal te Leiden.
In 1930 werd hij aldaar hoogleraar in dit vak, dat hij sedert 1929 tevens verscheidene jaren als tijdelijk hoogleraar doceerde aan de Columbia Univ. te New York.
