Wright (Thomas), een verdienstelijk geschied- en oudheidkundige, geboren te Ludlow den 21sten April 1810, studeerde te Cambridge en was weldra medewerker in de voornaamste Engelsche tijdschriften, zooals „Frasers Magazine”, „Quarterly review” enz. Hij werd vervolgens professor in de godgeleerdheid aan het Trinity college te Cambridge en heeft belangrijke schatten der oud-Engelsche letterkunde uit het stof der vergetelheid opgedolven. Van zijne geschriften vermelden wij voorts: „Essays on the literature, superstition and history of England in the middle ages (1846, 2 din)”, — „Biographia britannica literaria (1842—1846, 2 din)”, welke beide werken de geschiedenis behandelen van het Anglo-Saksische en Anglo-Normandische tijdperk, — wijders „Narratives of magic and sorcery (1851, 2 dln)”, — „The Celt, the Roman and the Saxon (1853)”, — en „Wanderings of an antiquary (1854)”.
Van zijne uitgaven van Angelsaksische, oud-Engelsche, midden-Latijnsche en Anglo-Normandische geschriften vermelden wij: „Politica! songs of England from the reign of John to that of Eduard II (1839)”, — „Political ballads (1841)”, — „Popular treatises on science written during the middle ages in Anglo-Saxon, Anglo-Norman and English (1841)”, — „Early mysteries and other latin poems of the XII and XIII centuries (1844)”, — „The Chester plays (1841)”, — en „The latin poems commonly attributed to W. Mapes (1847)”. Ook bragt hij de eerste critische uitgave van Chaucer in gereedheid (1847—1851, 3 din), gaf in 1863 de „Essays” van Bacon in het licht, — en schreef nog: „England under the house of Hannover (1848, 2 din)”, — „The history of Ireland (1857, 3 din)”, — „Dictionary of obsolete and provincial English (1858)”, — „History of France (1858—1860, 2 din)”, — „Domestic manners in England during the middle ages (1861)”, — „History of the grotesque and caricature in literature (1865)”, — en „Womankind in Western Europe from the earliest age to the XVII century (1869)”. Hij was een der stichters van de „Camden Society” en van de „British archaeological association”, lid van de „Académie des inscriptions” te Parijs, deed ontdekkingen omtrent de oud Romeinsche stad Uriconium, waarvan hij berigt gaf in zijn „Guide to the Roman city of Uriconium at Wroxeter”, en overleed te Chelsea den 23sten December 1877.
