Davis (sir john francis) - Eng. diplomaat en sinoloog, geb. 1795 te Londen, ging in 1816 met Lord Amherst naar Peking, werd in 1843 gouverneur van Hongkong, keerde in 1848 naar Engeland terug, en overleed 13 Nov. 1890 bij Bristol; hij schreef: Chinese novels, translated from the originals (1822); Hien min shoo ! Chinese moral maxims, with a free and verbal translation (1823); The Chinese, a description of the empire of China and its inhabitants (1836); Sketches of China (1841); China during the war and since the peace (1852, 2 din.).
