Vooral na 1915 werd hij bekend door zijn optreden in Engelse en Amerikaanse films, hoewel hij ook in radio- en televisieprogramma’s meespeelde en tevens toneelrollen vervulde. Hij is het type van dt bombastische, soms boosaardige komiek.
