Van 1954—57 was hij verbonden aan'het National Institute of Mental Health, van 1958-68 aan de universiteit van Californië te Berkeley, sinds 1962 als hoogleraar. Sinds 1968 bezet Goffman de Benjamin Franklin-leerstoel in de sociologie en antropologie aan de universiteit van Pennsylvanië te Philadelphia. Uitgaande van enkele algemene symbolisch interactionistische noties toonde Goffman door middel van alledaagse situaties aan, dat de sociale werkelijkheid door de mens in interactie met anderen tot stand wordt gebracht en in stand wordt gehouden.
