Zijn beste verhalen staan in Triple fugue 1924 en de bekendste roman is Before the bombardment 1926. Een levendig tijdsbeeld wordt gegeven in zijn vijfdelige autobiografie, bestaande uit Left hand, right hand 1945, The scarlet tree 1946, Great morning 1948, Laughter in the next room 1949 en Noble essences 1950.
