Semantiek, oftewel betekenisleer, is mijn specialisme. Op dat terrein doe ik veel van mijn onderzoek, en heb ik een groot NWO-project geleid in het verleden.
Het is een respectabel onderdeel van de taalkunde, en vrijwel iedere taalkunde-opleiding rekent semantiek tot zijn kerngebieden. Ik was dan ook niet gesticht over de column van Diederik Zijderveld in Hypothese (no 12-3, 2005, p 23), het tijdschrift van NWO (u weet wel, de Nederlandse onderzoeksfinancier), , waarin ik de volgende passage las: "Is dit nu een semantische discussie en daarmee onbelangrijk?"En daarmee onbelangrijk! Dat ik dit een domme opmerking vind, zult u wel geloven. Daarom citeer ik nu even iemand die er niet van verdacht hoeft te worden ambtshalve de semantiek een warm hart toe te dragen omdat hij nu eenmaal zijn brood er mee verdient, maar een medische wetenschapper in een publicatie over dermatologie (cf. J.H. Dirckx, Mere semantics.
Dermatopathology: Practical & Conceptual 1995; 1;56-7).
"It would seem self-evident that meaning lies at the heart of communication. [..] Hence, it is hard to see the point of view of those who dismiss serious inquiries into the meaning of words and phrases as merely semantic, as if meaning were but a peripheral or trivial concern with respect to the use of language. How does it happen that a word referring to the science of meaning has such strong connotations of irrelevance and even frivolity?...
"Any investigator, theorist, or educator who cannot be troubled to choose and use words with caution and discretion incurs the suspicion of being equally negligent in making and recording observations, gathering and sorting facts, setting up and testing hypotheses, and drawing valid deductions from premises. Similarly, anyone who scorns the "merely" semantic facets of a subject as unworthy of serious consideration, or as somehow peripheral to the issues and their expression and discussion, confesses to a sadly distorted scale of values, a deficient sense of how language works, and in fact an utter failure to appreciate the meaning of meaning."
Ik kan alleen maar hopen dat wat "self-evident" is voor een dermatoloog, ooit ook begrepen wordt door de heer Zijderveld.
