engelsch dramaticus, geb. 30 Jan. 1819 te Boston (Lincolnshire), trad 1841 op met het drama The patrician’s daughter; gevolgd door The heart and the world "(1847), Strathmore (1849), The favourite of fortune (1886), Donna Diana en Lamed for life (1871). M. sluit zich bij voorkeur bij de klassieke engelsche modellen aan; ook als talentvol novellist heeft hij zich doen kennen o. a. door The family credit and other tales (1861).
Hij publiceerde voorts een verzameling zijner Dramatic and poetical works (2 dln., 1876); overl. 5 Jan. 1890 te Londen.
