Eng. diplomaat en sinoloog, geb. 1795 te Londen, ging in 1816 met Amherst naar Peking, arbeidde sinds aan de eng belangen in China, werd in 1843 gouverneur van Hongkong, keerde in 1848 naar Engeland terug, en overl. 13 Nov. 1890 te Hollywood Tower bij Bristol; hij schreef: Chinese novels, translated from the originals (Londen 1822), Uien wun shoo: Chinese moral marlins, with a free and verbal translation (1823), The Chinese, a description of the empire of China and its inhabitants (1836), Sketches of China (1841), China, daring the war and since the peace (1852 en 1857).
