Engelsch oudheidvorscher, geb. 1795 te Nottingham, doorkruiste sinds 1832 Italië, Griekenland en de Levant, ontdekte de ruïnen van Xanthus, oude hoofdstad van Lycie, en van 13 andere steden, en bracht een belangrijke verzameling archeologische en natuurwetenschappelijke voorwerpen bijeen, die hij aan het Britsch Museum schonk; hij overl. 8 Nov. 1860 te Nottingham. De resultaten zijner ontdekkingen publiceerde hij in : A journal written dwing an excursion in Asm Minor (1839), An account of discoveries in Lycia (1841), The Xanthian Marbles, their acquisition and transmission to England (1843), The inscribed monuments at Xanthus (1843), Tra veis and researches in Asia Minor (1852), Lycia, Caria and Lydia, illustrated by G.
