Na freelance-journalistiek werd hij in 1913 redacteur letterkunde van de New Statesman, in 1919-34 redacteur van de London Mercury (waarin hij publiceerde als Solomon Eagle). Hij was satirisch ingesteld en schreef intellectuele poëzie.
