The city and the pillar (1948) is de eerste Amerikaanse roman die gedetailleerd een homoseksueel milieu beschrijft. In 1960 was Vidal democratisch kandidaat voor het Congres, waarbij hij de latere president Kennedy versloeg; hij werd echter zelf ook verslagen. Vidal woont sinds de jaren zestig te Rome. Naast romans en novellen schrijft hij historische romans, essays, litteraire kritieken, politieke satires en drama’s.
