Leonardo, Italiaans historicus en humanist, *1370 Arezzo, ✝9.3.1444 Florence; naar zijn geboorteplaats ook wel Aretino genoemd. Van 1405-15 was Bruni secretaris van vier opeenvolgende pausen, van 1417—44 kanselier van Florence.
Hij was een beroemd humanist, schreef een onberispelijk Latijn, vertaalde Platoon, Aristoteles, Ploutarchos en Demosthenes en was de belangrijkste historicus van de Italiaanse humanisten. Werken: De bello Italico adversus Gothos (1471), Epistolae familiares (1472), Commentarius rerum suo tempore gestarum (1485), Historiarum Florentinarum libri XII (1610; Ital. vert. 1476).
