Engels romanschrijver en essayist (Londen 21 Juni 1873), groeide op bij de dokken en begon als journalist. In 1912 maakte hij een reis de Amazone op, waarvan The Sea and the Jungle (1912), dat velen als zijn meesterwerk beschouwen, het resultaat was.
In 1914 ging hij als oorlogscorrespondent naar Frankrijk. Zijn roman Gallions Reach verwierf in 1927 de Prix Femina-Vie Heureuse, waarna hij zich alleen aan zijn auteurschap ging wijden. Zijn werk is bezonnen, somber bij het waarschuwen voor de ontwrichting der maatschappij. De invloed van H. Melville onderging hij meer dan die van Jos. Conrad.Bibl.
