Engelsch geschiedschrijver en schrijver van reisverhalen en dergelijke, geb 7 Maart 1747, trad in 1771 in den geestelijken stand, bereisde van 1775—79 alsgids van den graaf van Pembroke ongeveer geheel Europa, later als begeleider van het parlementslid Whitbread Zuid- en Noord-Europa, bezocht in 1784 Zwitserland en Frankrijk, in 1794 Nederland, Duitschland en Hongarije, werd in 1805 aartsdeken van Wiltshire, en overl. 16 Juni 1828 te Bemerton. Voornaamste werken: Sketches of the natural, civil and political state of Switzerland (Lond. 1779) later omgewerkt en uitgegeven onder den titel: Travels in Switzerland and the country of the Grisons (3 dln. Lond. 1789; 4 druk 1801), Travels into Poland, Russia, Sioeden and Denmark (3 dln. Lond. 1784—90; 4 druk 1803), Memoirs of Sir Rob.
