Engelsch schei- en plantkundige, geb. te Stratton in Gloucestershire, 11 Febr. 1795, overl. 13 Dec. 1867, werd in 1822 te Oxford hoogleeraar in de scheikunde, in 1834 in de botanie, hij schreef : A description of active and extinct rolcanoes (1826), Introduction to the Atomic Thcorg (1831), Lectures on climate (1862) enz.
