amerik. plantkundige, geb. 18 Nov. 1810 te Paris in Oneida county van den staat New-York, bereisde een groot deel van Europa, werd 1842 hoogleeraar aan het Harvard College te Cambridge in Massachusetts, en overl. hier 30 Jan. 1888. Van zijn talrijke geschriften moeten vermeld: Elements of botany (New-York 1836), later verschenen onder den titel: The botanical textbook; verder Manual of the botany of the Northern United States (Boston, Cambridge 1848), Genera florae Americae boreali-orientalis illustrata (2 dln., Boston 1848—49), Botany of the United States exploring expedition daring the years 1838—42 under the command of Charles Wilkes (Philad. 1854), Darwiniana.
