Amerikaans popzanger en -pianist, *29.9.1935 Ferriday (Louisiana). Lewis studeerde aan het Bible Institute te Waxahatchie (Texas) en leerde zichzelf piano, gitaar, viool en accordeon spelen.
Ca.1955, toen de rock and roll hoogtij vierde, werd hij bekend door zijn aan country and western verwante rockstijl. Zijn rauwe emotionele zang en zijn manier van pianospelen waren kenmerkend voor zijn muziek. Vanaf 1960 had hij succes met rustiger country and western.
