Amerikaans filmacteur, *1.2.1901 Cadiz (Ohio), †17.11.1960 Hollywood; getrouwd (1939) met Carole ➝Lombard. Gable debuteerde bij het toneel en speelde sinds 1924, aanvankelijk met weinig succes, ook in stomme films, o.a. in Forbidden paradise (1924; Ernst ➝Lubitsch).
Met de komst van de geluidsfilm werd Gable de ‘king of Hollywood’ en een van de, vooral bij het vrouwelijk publiek, meest geliefde filmsterren van de VS. Zijn roem als charmante held bereikte zijn hoogtepunt met Gone with the wind (1939).
