In 1831 schreef hij de prachtige ballade The forging of the anchor and the pope. Daarna ontwikkelde hij zich tot een pionier van de Keltische (Ierse) renaissance. Werken: Lays of the western Gael (1865), Congaï (1872; episch gedicht). Uitgave: Poems (1880).
