Te Milaan trad hij in dienst van Galeazzo Sforza. Na tijdelijk als ‘chantre ordinaire’ onder Karel VIII gediend te hebben, werd hij te Saint-Quentin kanunnik en kanselier. Compère was m.n. beroemd om zijn chansons. Composities: mis L’homme armé, 26 motetten, chansons. Uitgave: Opera omnia, door L.Finscher (1958 vlg.).
