Na Rice’s dood (1822) schreef Besant enkele sociale romans over het armoedige East End te Londen. Werken: History of London (1873), The golden butterfly (1876), Ail sorts and conditions of men (1882), Dorothy Forster (1884), The children of Gibeon (1886), Armorel of Lyonesse (1890), London (1892), Autobiography (1902), London in the 19th century (1909).
