Sylvia, Amerikaans dichteres, *27.10.1932 Boston, ♰(zelfm.) 10.2.1963 Londen. Plath studeerde aan Smith College en in Cambridge in Engeland, waar zij haar latere echtgenoot, de Engelse dichter Ted Hughes, ontmoette.
De mentale depressies, die al vroeg optraden (haar eerste zelfmoordpoging op 17-jarige leeftijd vormt het onderwerp van haar autobiografische roman The bell jar), leidden tenslotte tot zelfmoord. Plaths poëzie is origineel, indringend en bevat veel autobiografische elementen. Haar reputatie berust vooral op haar postuum verschenen werk, Ariel.
