Brits sociaal antropoloog, *25.4.1906 Britstown (Zuid-Afrika). Fortes werd in 1950 hoogleraar in de sociale antropologie te Cambridge.
Hij verrichtte onderzoek o.a. in Ghana, Nigeria en Lesotho. Hij specialiseerde zich vooral in verwantschapsstructuren. Werken: The dynamics of clanship among the Tallensi (1945,2e dr. 1957), The web of kinship among the Tallensi (1949), Oedipus and Job in West African religions (1959), Kinship and the social order: the legacy of Lewis H. Morgan (1969). Samen met E.E.Evans-Pritchard redigeerde hij African political systems (1940).
