Engelsch oriëntalist, geb. 1821 in Bedfordshire, bekleedde van 1864—69 allerlei landsbetrekkingen in Engelsch-lndië, vestigde zich vervolgens te Londen, en schreef: A sketch of the modern languages of East Indies (1878), Linguistic and Oriental Essays (deel 1—3, Lond. 1880-91), Sketches of Anglo-lndian life (1881), Pictures of Indian life (1881), Sorrows of Anglo-Indian life (1889), A sketch of the modern languages of Africa (Lond. 1883), Poems of many years and many places (1887), Notes on missionary subjects (1889), Clouds on the horizon. A study of the various forms of error in the religious conceptions of the present epoch (1890), Africa rediviva : the occupation of Africa by Christian missionaries (1891) enz. ; hij bekleedt eereambten aan verschillende wetenschappelijke instellingen in Engeland en is lid van vele binnen- en buitenlandsche geleerde genootschappen.
