engelsch entomoloog en ornitholoog, geb. 8 Juli 1808 te Chelsea, kreeg in 1831 een betrekking aan de natuurhistorische afdeeling van het Britsche museum, in welke hij werkzaam bleef tot aan zijn dood, 6 Mei 1872. Zijn voornaamste werken zijn: The entomology of Australasia (Lond. 1833), Synopsis of the species of insects, belonging to the family of Phasmidae (1835), en het vermaarde ornithologische standaardwerk Genera of birds (3 dln., met 371 platen, 1837 —49); verder moeten vermeld: Catalogue of the British birds in the collection of the British Museum (1848 en 1863), Catalogue of the birds of the tropical islands of the Pacific Ocean in the British Museum (1859), Catalogue of the mammalia and birds of New Guinea in the British Museum (1859), Tlcindlist of the genera and species of birds (3 dln., Lond. 1869—71), waarin 2915 genera en 11.000 species opgeteld werden.
