Schotsch phrenoloog en philosoof, geb. 21 Oct. 1788 te Edinburg, leerde in 1816 Spurzheim kennen en werd een verdediger van diens phrenologisch stelsel; hij overl. 14 Aug. 1858; voornaamste geschriften: Essays on phrenology (1819), Elements of phrenology (1824), The constitution of Man (1828, 9de druk 1879), Lectures on popular education (1833), Moral philosophy (1840), Principles of criminal legislation (1854), Phrenology applied to painting and sculpture (1855), The currency question (1855), The relation betiveen science and religion (1857). benevens artikelen in het „Phrenological Journal” (20 din., 1824—47), in „Chamber’s Journal” enin de „Scotsman.“
