Amerikaans econoom, *7.10.1916 New York. Rostow was hoogleraar te Oxford (1946-47), aan het Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1950- 65) en te Austin (1969).
Hij was tevens economisch adviseur van de presidenten Kennedy en Johnson. In zijn belangrijkste werk, Stages of economie growth (1960), onderscheidt hij vijf fasen in de economische groei: het traditioneel systeem (zonder groei), de voorbereidende fase, de start, de groei naar rijpheid en het tijdperk van de massaconsumptie.
