Ely (richard theodore) - Amerikaansch staathuishoudkundige, geb. 1854 te Ripley (NewYork), studeerde eerst in Amerika en daarna te Heidelberg; waar hij promoveerde, werd in 1885 benoemd tot hoogleeraar in de staathuishoudkunde aan de John Hopkins Universiteit te Baltimore en in 1892 tot hoogleeraar in de staathuishoudkunde en do geschiedenis te Madison (Wisconsin).
