Coxe (william) - Engelsch geschiedschrijver, geb. 1747, trad in 1771 in den geestelijken stand, reisde 1775-79 als gouverneur van graaf Pembroke door bijna geheel Europa; later, als begeleider van het latere parlementslid Whitbread, bezocht hij Zuid- en Noord-Europa, Zwitserland en Frankrijk, Nederland (1786), Duitschland en Hongarije (1794); hij werd in 1805 aartsdeken van Wiltshire, en overl. 1828 te Bemerton. Voornaamste werken: Sketches of the natural civil and political state of Switzerland (1779), later omgewerkt en uitgegeven onder den titel: Travels in Switserland and the country of the Grisons (3 dln. 1789; 1801); Travels into Poland, Russia, Sweden and Denmark (3 dln. 1784-90; 4e druk 1803); Memoirs of Sir Rob.
