Carey (Henry Charles) - Noord-Amerikaansch staathuishoudkundige, geb. 1793 te Philadelphia, overl. 1879. Tot 1835 was hij als opvolger van zijn vader in den boekhandel werkzaam; intusschen studeerde hij in de staathuishoudkunde; nadat hij zich uit den boekhandel had teruggetrokken, wijdde hij zich geheel aan deze wetenschap. Hij bestreed de leer van Malthus en de grondrente-theorie van David Ricardo.
Zijn belangrijkste werk is: Principles of social science (3 din., Philadelphia 1858—1860). Van zijn verdere talrijke geschriften noemen wij: Principles of political economy (3 din., Philadelphia 1837—1840); Answer to the questions: what constitutes currency ? what are the causes of its unsteadiness — and what is the remedy ?
