Aytoun (william edmondstoune) - Eng. dichter, 1813-66, hoogleeraar in de fraaie letteren te Edinburg en in 1852 benoemd tot sheriff en admiraal der Orckney- en Shetland-eilanden. A. was medewerker van „Blackwood Magazine” en „Punch”, en schreef o.a. Lays of the Scottish cavaliers (1848), Firmilian, or the student of Badajoz (1854), Ballads of Scotland (1858), Bothwell (1861), Poems and Ballads of Goethe.
