Van 1929—40 verzorgde hij radioprogramma’s. Zijn uitbundige persoonlijkheid, beroemd en berucht door zijn scherpe humor, stond model voor Egomaniac in de komedie The man who came to dinner van G.S. Kaufman en M. Hart; Woollcott trad zelf in deze rol op.
