Engels schrijver, *21.9.1866 Bromley (Kent), ♰13.8.1946 Londen, Wells’ eerste succes was The time machine (1895), een visionair geschreven science-fictionverhaal, waarna een reeks romans volgde die een vergaande invloed hebben gehad op dit genre: The island of dr. Moreau (1896), The invisible man (1897), The war of the worlds (1898), The first men in the moon (1901).
Hij schreef beroemde short stories (Kipps, 1905) en sociale romans over vrouwenemancipatie, vrije liefde en sociale misstanden. In A modern Utopia (1905) toonde Wells zich ten voeten uit als maatschappelijk hervormer. Daarnaast verschenen van hem ca. 50 populair-wetenschappelijke boeken over geschiedenis, darwinisme, socialisme enz.
