Pas in 1930 kreeg hij bekendheid door zijn rol in The last mile. W.Fox haalde Tracy naar Hollywood en liet hem m.n. gangsterrollen vervullen. Van 1935—56 werkte hij voor sMetro-Goldwyn-Mayer, waar hij zich ontwikkelde tot een groot karakterspeler. In deze periode speelde hij in een vijftigtal films, waarvan negen met K.Hepburn.
