John Ronald Reuel, Engels schrijver, *3. 1.1892 Bloemfontein (Zuid-Afrika), ♱2.9.1973 Oxford. Tolkien verhuisde op driejarige leeftijd naar Birmingham.
Hij studeerde in Oxford, waar hij van 1925-59 hoogleraar Angelsaksisch was. In 1937 schreef Tolkien The hobbit, dat de aanzet vormde voor een nieuwe, fantastische mythologie, die hij uitwerkte in The lord of the rings (3 dln.). Hierin staan de hobbits (mythische wezens) centraal. Het thema is de strijd tussen goed en kwaad. De trilogie werd enorm populair en is in 1979 door R.Bakshi verfilmd.
