Sean, Anglo-Iers toneelschrijver, *31 maart 1884 te Dublin, ♱18 september 1964 te Torquay. O’Casey was bijna geheel autodidact. Na aanvankelijke mislukkingen werden in 1923 zijn stukken The shadow of a gunman en Cathleen listens in opgevoerd in het Abbey Theatre te Dublin. Zijn stuk Juno and the paycock (1924) vestigde zijn reputatie. In zijn eerste stukken was hij zuiver realist, langzamerhand kwamen echter expressionistische elementen in zijn werk. The plough and the stars (1926) veroorzaakte na de opvoering te Dublin zoveel beroering dat O’Casey besloot zich in het meer tolerante Londen te vestigen.
