Amerikaans protestants theoloog, *21.6.1892 Wright City, ♱ 6.7.1962 New Haven (Connecticut). Niebuhr was van 1913—29 predikant te Detroit en sinds 1928 hoogleraar aan Union Theological Seminary te New York.
De Europese inslag van het religieuze denken van Niebuhr, waarbij hij menigmaal aan de dialectische theologie van Barth en Brunner doet denken, heeft in Amerika een profetische kritiek ontketend op de optimistische godsdienstfilosofie van o.a. R.W.Emerson en de leer van het ‘sociale evangelie’ teruggedrongen.
