William Edward Hartpole, Engels historicus, *26.3.1838 Grumlin (bij Dublin), ♱22.10.1903 Londen. Lecky studeerde aan Trinity College te Dublin.
Hij was sinds 1895 afgevaardigde voor de universiteit van Dublin in het Engelse parlement, waar hij behoorde tot de unionisten. Lecky maakte veel studie van de ideeëngeschiedenis. Werken: History of the rise and influence of the spirit of rationalism in Europe (2 dln. 1865), Hist. of European morals (2 dln. 1869), Hist. of England in the 18th century (8 dln. 1878-90), Democracy and liberty (1896), Historical and political essays (1909).
