William Dean, Amerikaans schrijver, *1. 3.1837 Saint Martins Ferry (Ohio), ♱ll.5.1920New York. Howells werd journalist en schreef een biografie van Lincoln.
Hij werd door deze benoemd tot consul in Venetië (1861—65). Na zijn terugkeer ging hij weer in de journalistiek en werd uiteindelijk hoofdredacteur van de Atlantic Monthly (1872-81). Howells schreef een groot aantal romans, aanvankelijk psychologische studies. Zijn werk werd later realistisch en sociaal-kritisch van inslag. Hij speelde een belangrijke rol in de ontwikkeling van de Amerikaanse litteratuur en stimuleerde talentrijke jongere schrijvers, o.a. Mark Twain, Henry James, Emily Dickinson en Stephen Crane.
