Zijn werken spelen vooral in Wessex, maar zijn geen streekromans; voor hem was Wessex het toneel van algemeen-menselijke conflictsituaties. Zijn diepe natuurverbondenheid en rake persoonsschildering (vooral zijn tragische vrouwenfiguren) werden gedragen door een pessimistische aan Schopenhauer verwante filosofie.
