Daarna wijdde hij zich vnl. aan historische en letterkundige studies. Hij was een typische vertegenwoordiger van het Whig-liberalisme, dat in zijn werken duidelijk tot uiting komt. Werken: View of the state of Europe during the Middle Ages (1818; suppl. 1848), Constitutional history of England from the accession of Henry VII to the death of George II (2 din. 1827), Introduction to the literature of Europe in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries (3 din. 1838—39).
