Amerikaans filmactrice, *14.10.1896 Springfield (Ohio); zuster van Dorothy➝ Gish. Gish speelde bij het toneel kinderrollen tot zij met Dorothy debuteerde in An unseen enemy (1912) van D.
W.Griffith. Zij wordt beschouwd als een van de beste actrices van de zwijgende film. Haar delicate schoonheid maakte haar tot Griffith’ ideale heldin en zij speelde een hoofdrol in talloze van zijn films, o.a. in Birth of a nation (1915), Flearts of the World (1918), A romance of happy valley (1918), Broken blossoms (1919), True heart Susie (1919), Waydown east (1920), Orphans of the storm (1921). Sinds 1930 treedt zij ook op het toneel op.
