In 1877 werd hij hoogleraar aan King’s College te Londen, in 1885 te Oxford. Hij was gespecialiseerd in de geschiedenis van de 17e eeuw. Zijn werk onderscheidt zich meer door onpartijdigheid dan door stijl.
