James Henry, Amerikaans egyptoloog, *27.8.1865 Rockford, ♱2.12.1935New York.Breasted studeerde aan Yale University en te Berlijn. In 1905 werd hij hoogleraar te Chicago, waar hij met hulp van J.D.Rockefeller jr. het Oriental Institute stichtte (1919).
Hij leidde twee archeologische expedities (1905-07) naar Egypte. Werken: A new chapter in the life of Thutmose III (1900), A history of Egypt (1905), Ancient records of Egypt (5 dln. 1906-07), Development of religion and thought in ancient Egypt (1912), Ancient times (1916), The dawn of conscience (1933).
