John Gerard, Engels schrijver, *13.4.1922 Bradford. Braine oefende verscheidene beroepen uit en werd uiteindelijk bibliothecaris, maar wijdde zich vanaf 1951 geheel aan de litteratuur.
Tijdens een verblijf in het ziekenhuis schreef hij zijn succesvolle roman Room at the top (1957), die verfilmd werd. Braine behoorde tot de Angry Young Men.
