Amerikaans historicus en politicus, *3.10.1800 Worcester (Massachusetts), ♱17.1.1891 Washington D.C. Bancroft studeerde aan de universiteiten van Harvard, Göttingen en Berlijn, waar hij o.a. contact had met Hegel.
Hij was minister van Marine (1845-46) onder president Polk. Van 1846—49 en van 1867—74 was Bancroft gezant te resp.Londen en Berlijn. Als historicus had hij vooral succes door de goede compositie en levendige stijl van zijn boeken. Werken: A history of the United States of America, 1492—1782 (10 dln. 1834—85), Literary and historical miscellanies (1855), The American revolution (4 dln. 1860—75), Joseph Reed, an historical essay (1867), History of the formation of the constitution of the USA, 1782— 1789 (2 dln. 1882), Martin van Buren to the end of his public carreer (1889).
