(geb. 1921) Engels acteur, regisseur en (toneel)schrijver van Russische afkomst. Reeds op 16-jarige leeftijd was hij toneelspeler, maar hij ging weldra over tot het zelf schrijven van stukken, o.a.
Blow your own hom 1941, House of regrets 1943, The Banbury nose 1944 en The man in the raincoat 1949. Daarna volgde een aantal succesvolle satirische stukken, zoals The love of four colonels 1951, Romanoff and Juliet 1957 en Photo finish 1962. Overig werk o.a. Add a dash of pity 1959 (Fataal bevel; verhalen). The loser 1960 (Als alles in scherven valt; roman), Frontiers of the sea 1966 (toneel), Halfway up the tree 1967 (Half in de boom; toneel), Krumnagel 1971 (Krumnagel; roman) Overheard 1981 (toneel) en My Russia 1983. Als filmacteur kreeg hij o.m. bekendheid door zijn rollen in 'Quo Vadis' (1951), 'Spartacus' (1960), 'Topkapi' (1964), en 'Murder on the Nile' (1978). In 1977 publiceerde hij het autobiografische Dear me.
