Zij werd met name bekend door haar goed gedocumenteerde biografieën, waaronder Mary, queen of Scots 1969, Cromwell, our chief of men 1973, King James VI of Scotland, / of England 1974, Lives of the kings and queens of England 1975 en King Charles II 1979.
Daarnaast schreef ze de jeugdboeken King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table 1970 en Robin Hood 1971 (Robin Hood). De roman Quiet as a nun 1977 (Zwijgend als een non) werd niet erg goed ontvangen; het werk kreeg een vervolg in The wild island; a mystery 1978. Later werk: A splash of red 1981 (Uitbarsting in rood) en The cool repentance 1982 (Schaamteloos berouw). F. is tevens vertaler.
